Instructor Bio

Christopher Miner, MAI
New London, CT
Christopher Miner, MAI
Christopher A. Miner, MAI, has integrated GIS into his appraisal practice. By programming ArcView GIS, he developed a large area site selection model that calculates the square feet of self-storage space that can be built at any location, retail gravity modeling that generates a map showing feasibility potential over a large geographic area, and "TreasureMaps" for large geography site selection. By integrating Excel with ArcView GIS, he was able to design a retail gravity modeling system that returns a sales forecast at a particular site, and a physician practice model that concludes with the appropriate level of staffing for a proposed site. Mr. Miner became the fourth generation in his family's real estate business after graduating from Southern Connecticut State University with an education degree, a physics major, and a math minor. In 1980 he formed an appraisal company with Robert Silverstein. Both received their MAI designations in 1987. Mr. Miner is responsible for the firm' s computer systems. He took the firm from Radio Shack TRS-80 computers and disk swapping to Windows clients on an NT BackOffice Server. He designed, installed and maintains the company's LAN, Dial-up Access, DSL, Email, GIS, Intranet, FTP and Web Sites. He has been responsible for selecting software for company usage, implementing it and training the staff. He has designed, built, installed and maintained the company's databases and collaborative appraisal and knowledge-management solutions. Consulting projects include developing and installing GIS systems for economic and commercial development organizations; developing Microsoft Access databases for the Connecticut Chapter of the Appraisal Institute and an options trader; using Excel and VBA to parse and print downloaded account information for a stock brokerage affiliate; and using Visual Basic to build an expert system for the valuation of marinas for ad valorum taxation. Mr. Miner specializes in marina appraisals. His hobbies are sailboat racing and technology. See www.msac.com for additional information.
