Valuation of Conservation Easements Certificate Program

Introduction of Certificate Programs

In October 2007 the Appraisal Institute introduced its first certificate program, Valuation of Conservation Easements. The first offering in Denver had 80 students.

The program was developed over a period of almost two years and addressed concerns by the federal agencies for more comprehensive education on conservation easement valuation, one of the most controversial and scrutinized topics in valuation. This program was developed jointly with the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers (ASFMRA) and American Society of Appraisers (ASA) in cooperation with the Land Trust Alliance.

This certificate program is 4.5 days long and includes an exam. Participants who successfully pass the exam are given a Certificate of Completion, which provides evidence to potential clients and employers of the appraiser’s education in this specialized topic.

To further help appraisers hone their skills the Appraisal Institute anticipates introducing additional certificate programs to appraisers on problematic or advanced-level topics. Topics for certificate programs will cover a body of knowledge in a specialty area, allowing the participant to obtain educational competency in a property type or specialty area, and will always include an exam.
