    Valuation Magazine Submission Guidelines

    Get Published in Valuation

Valuation is the quarterly magazine of the Appraisal Institute, providing appraisers with timely, practical information and thought leadership to help them conduct their business effectively.

Leveraging your experience and perspective by publishing an article in Valuation can help you:

    • Expand your professional portfolio and visibility.
    • Give something meaningful back to the industry.
    • Communicate your experiences and expertise to your peers.

Valuation is primarily interested in articles for the following sections. If your concept is selected, we may ask you to write the article for us to edit or we may ask you to be interviewed by a professional writer.

    Features (2,000 words)
Is there a major issue, trend, concern or market sector that you see as having a significant effect on the valuation profession or real estate industry? Feature topics should advance or inform the industry.

    Consider This: Residential (850 words)
We’re interested in hearing from appraisers who have something to say that benefits the valuation profession – and in this section, we invite you to share topics and experiences that relate to residential appraisers specifically.

    Consider This: Commercial (850 words)
In this section, we invite you to share topics and experiences that relate to commercial appraisers specifically.

    Growth Strategies  (600 words)
Are you a successful appraiser interested in sharing guidance with your peers on how to grow an appraisal business or on particularly effective business practices? We want to help you spread the word to strengthen the appraisal industry as a whole!

    The Submission Process

Do you have an article idea in mind? Here’s a brief overview of the submission process.

Start by pitching your idea to the editors.
Draft a short proposal (one to two paragraphs; around 150 words) that outlines your article idea. It should include:

    • What you want to cover.
    • Why it’s important to the valuation profession.
    • How it’s timely.
    • What sources of information you plan to use.
    • The section of Valuation for which the article is intended [OR] For which section of Valuation you’re pitching your article.

You should also include a little about yourself so the editors can determine how you’re qualified to write about the topic.

Valuation prefers exclusive, original content. If you’re pitching your idea to other publications, let us know. If you’ve already published an article on your proposed topic, please indicate where and when it ran.

    If Your Pitch Is Accepted

We’ll either ask you to write the piece and offer to help you further define and refine the article as needed, or we’ll assign a professional writer. The editors will discuss story angle, word count, photography requirements, due date and other information to help you complete the assignment.
