    July 2024 Special President's Message

I want to address the misunderstanding caused by our suggestion of a periodic “recertification” for appraisers in our letter to the Appraiser Qualifications Board regarding the college-level education requirements.

The intent of this suggestion was to highlight the need to reform and enhance the existing continuing education requirements. Currently, appraisers can fulfill almost 50% of their CE hours using “required” courses, such as the 7-hour USPAP update course, valuation bias, state required courses, etc. Although these standards and ethics courses are necessary, they do not address the original intent of the continuing education requirement, which was for appraisers to continuously learn and refine skills that will help them in their day-to-day professional practice.

Our suggestion was simply meant to open the conversation and was never intended to devalue your existing credential or competency. It was intended to place emphasis on the high-quality education that Appraisal Institute professionals receive to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date. We would like all practitioners to enjoy the same level of professional advancement and growth that an Appraisal Institute affiliation provides, and “recertification” for practitioners that do not benefit from our advanced education in their careers is one idea that others have suggested in the past. We do not expect the AQB to act upon a “recertification” suggestion for appraisers at this time as their current work is focused on the college-level education requirements.

Your feedback is deeply appreciated. Thank you for the opportunity to provide this clarification and I look forward to hearing from you with any further questions or comments.

    Regards,
